Penrhos is an ancient manor farm on the border of Herefordshire and Wales. It has been added to and evolved over the ages, adapting to the needs of the times. Barns were added that, with the house, form a quadrangle around a court yard and puddle-duck pond.
The original cruck hall is about 700 years old, probably built during the reign of Edward I. One distinctive feature is the long passing windbraces in the roof structure. Only a few similar cruck buildings have survived, nearly all within a small area close to the Welsh border.
In 1880 there was fire in the house and it was badly repaired. It survived another ninety years but the rot got in and by 1970 it was about to be bulldozed. The aim then, called the Penrhos Project, was to save the ancient farm buildings. The problem was that it had to pay for itself so, as in the past, it had to adapt to contempory times. It became a restaurant, a hotel, business training centre, a school for Food & Health and now there is an organic/ecological shop.
Our shop contains organic food and ecological products. Our aim is to supply only foods and products that we would choose for ourselves; Why? For inspiration, vitality and health.
